RG+P is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary architectural design practice with a reputation for a thoughtful, sustainable, and striking design. Since the studios, based in Leicester, Birmingham, and London, were founded over 40 years ago, they have delivered developments across the UK, with expertise in the residential, education, commercial, retirement, leisure, and mixed-use sectors. A member of the prestigious AJ100 and Building Top 150 Consultants, their core disciplines include architecture and interior design; placemaking, and urbanism and they have created hundreds of new communities, changing cityscapes and rural landscapes to leave a legacy of quality.
As an architectural design business, RG+P has large data storage requirements, with many large technical design documents that require long-term storage for their clients and for compliance. As a result, their storage and backup/recovery solution needs, and costs, were growing consistently year-on-year.
Supreme Systems had consulted with RG+P’s directors and IT administrators to investigate potential solutions that might help to mitigate this, and synchronicity occurred as Supreme Systems had recently partnered with a cutting-edge technology firm called Moonwalk Universal, who provide a ground-breaking solution for data management and archiving.
The Moonwalk solution can be configured to the specific needs of a business to identify data based on how often it is accessed, when it was last accessed, its age, its size, and many other factors. Once appropriate data is identified it can be automatically archived to inexpensive cloud storage, not only reducing the size and cost of backing up the live data, but also freeing up expensive storage on live servers, extending the life of the hardware, reducing, or removing the need for costly resource upgrades and even shortening the time for a live server restore in the event of a disaster recovery situation.
But that is not all that Moonwalk provides.
Cleverly the system employs a system of extremely small “tags” in the locations where the file was previously stored, each only a few bytes long. This means that users can continue to locate and access these “archived” files as though they had never moved at all – removing the element of disruption or needing to manage and organise an ever-growing archive file structure.
In fact, Moonwalk creates zero disruption at all, to the end-user experience, or the business and its existing IT infrastructure.
Typically, Moonwalk will reduce the live data storage requirements of a business by around 50% over the first 12 months – with all the associated cost savings that this allows.
All-in-all, an ideal solution for the needs of RG+P.
The first step was to perform a “file assessment”, to analyse the live data so that various scenarios could be applied, and predictions made on how much data could be archived, in turn allowing for an accurate prediction of the cost savings, etc. Interestingly, Moonwalk can also use predictive capabilities to look at historic data growth and show how those savings are likely to increase over time.
With this process completed, Supreme Systems were able to show an expected ROI for full implementation and demonstrate how significant operational cost savings would be achieved. The decision to proceed was an easy one for the business with this information available.
Our project delivery team, in consultation with RG+P’s own IT administrators, then identified a suitable cloud storage location, based on cost, security, uptime, redundancy/resilience, SLA’s, and the physical location of the datacentres. In this instance, Wasabi Cloud Storage was selected as the best option.
We then planned the implementation and delivered this over a period of a few days. The implementation was a success with no disruption to the staff at RG+P or the business.
RG+P is now benefitting from significant live data storage reductions, with all the benefits that we mentioned previously.
Rob Woolston, Architectural Director at RG+P Ltd., said of the project “as a growing business, and one that generates significant data quantities, we were keen to work with Supreme to develop a new strategy for our DR and archiving needs. Following a clear demonstration and a period of testing it was clear that Moonwalk would provide us with a key component of this strategy. The ability to archive data whilst still seeing it within our core file structure enables an efficient method for us to manage and access our archive information whilst actively reducing the data pressure on our DR. Probably the best thing you can say about a system like this is that not a single team member has actually noticed that it is there and doing its job!”
