Founded in 1948, Fitzgerald is a highly respected civil engineering contractor that works across a broad spectrum of industry sectors, offering a wide range of specialisms from project development of highways construction through to high-specification public realm contracting, for clients across the UK.
Supreme Systems, as the IT support provider for Fitzgerald Contractors, were consulted when their firewall was nearing its end of life and the company expected they would need to invest a considerable sum to refresh the existing hardware and licencing.
After completing a review, we were able to provide insights and recommendations which included an alternative option that would not only satisfy the stringent cyber-security requirements but was considerably less expensive than their previous option and would provide additional benefits that they had not previously had available, including the ability for remote monitoring and configuration of the network and a new remote access agent that would improve the end-user experience with more reliable connectivity and ease-of-use.
Challenges were identified by undertaking a risk assessment plan. One such challenge was the large number of homeworkers whose secure connections to the company network would be broken by the switchover.
The Supreme Team commenced the project by notifying the staff at Fitzgerald Contractors of the work that would shortly take place and making available a booking system where timeslots were offered to the staff to schedule the installation of the new VPN Agent on end-user devices prior to the installation date. This ensured that disruption would be minimised before and after switchover.
Our engineers then reviewed the current firewall configuration to ensure replication on the new firewall including the rules and policies that govern network traffic.
The final stage of the project was ensuring the firewall was working as expected and to test all functions affected by replacing the firewall, such as the internet connection, communication between devices and applications, and that the Wi-Fi networks were accessible.
The installation of the new firewall for Fitzgerald Contractors and the process of updating all devices with the latest VPN software was a success and we were able to complete the project within the timescale previously agreed.
This project future proofs our client’s IT network and provides improved performance and security for both their office and remote working employees.
Nick Coley Managing Director at Fitzgerald Civil Engineering Contractors, said of the project:
‘The team at Supreme worked closely with us providing constructive advice, in a format and language we could understand, that gave us the confidence to entrust the works to them. They managed the process seamlessly from start to finish, and provided an excellent level of service throughout’
